A Newcomer’s Guide to the SCA in Arizona

Welcome to the Solar Kingdom!

Welcome to the Kingdom of Atenveldt and the Current Middle Ages! We’re part of the Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA), a hands-on, international living history organization where you don’t just study the past—you live it. Atenveldt is the SCA’s chapter in sunny Arizona, and we are proud to be an inclusive, family-friendly social group open to people of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities.

In the SCA, you’ll explore the world as it was from the 6th to the 16th century, including cultures across Europe, Asia, and the Americas. Whether you’re interested in armored combat, calligraphy, brewing, or bardic performance, there’s a place for you here.

The Kingdom Chatelaine can help you with questions regarding the SCA or help find your local Group.

Getting Started

You don’t need any gear, garb, or even a membership to start attending events and practices. Just show up with curiosity and an open mind! Our baronies, shires, and colleges span the entire state of Arizona, so you’re sure to find a group nearby. Reach out to the Kingdom Chatelaine if you’re not sure where to start.

Once you’re involved, you can try your hand at anything from historical clothing design and fiber arts to rapier defense, archery, cooking, or metalwork. Many of our members enjoy developing a “persona”—a character based in a specific time and place—but that comes later. Right now, just come say hello.

Attending an Event

Local groups host activities all month long, including classes, combat practices, officer meetings, scribal arts, and weekend-long events. Many events are free or low-cost to attend, and newcomers are always welcome.

Learning Something New

Our Kingdom offers many opportunities to pick up new skills, many taught in person by experienced members. Learn calligraphy, brewing, armor-making, dyeing, music, and more in a friendly environment.

Volunteering
Volunteers make the SCA run! From setting up tents to running classes and organizing feasts, members help create the magic. It’s a great way to make friends and get involved.
Finding Community
The SCA is home to thousands of participants worldwide, affectionately called “SCAdians.” In Atenveldt, you’ll find a welcoming network of creative, passionate people who love to share and learn together.

Newcomer Tips

Introduce Yourself

The best thing you can do at your first event or practice is say hello! SCAdians are passionate about their hobbies and love welcoming new people. Ask questions—we’re excited to share.

What’s in a Name?

In the SCA, you can choose a name that reflects your persona—real or imagined—as long as it’s historically inspired. Until you settle on one, it’s common to use “[Your Name] of [Group Name].”
