This post comes a little late, but 2025 was an action-packed year for the Shire of Burning Sands! We shared our passion for history, arts, and combat with the greater community while continuing to strengthen our bond as a group. Here’s a look back at our year:
Two Rivers Renaissance Faire Demo – January 31 – February 2
In late January, we had the honor of representing the SCA at the Two Rivers Renaissance Faire. This was a fantastic demo that included several of our artisans and fighters showing off their skills. From medieval combat demonstrations to showcasing period crafts, this event was a great introduction to the public about the depth of the SCA’s diverse interests.
War of the Phoenix – February 11-16
Our group attended the grand War of the Phoenix in mid-February, one of the largest and most exciting events of the year. A week filled with battles, tournaments, classes and festivities, this event allowed us to show off our martial prowess, compete in various challenges, and forge stronger ties with other SCA groups. We represented Burning Sands proudly and came home with prized memories.
Sun, Sand, and Sword “When in Rome” – March 1
March saw our group hosting our annual “Sun, Sand, and Sword” event. A wonderful day that explored themes of ancient Rome. Members took part in gladiator-style competitions, a bread-making constest, mosaics, and we held an archery competition during this event for the first time ever. We had the joy of welcoming many newcomers gained from our previous demo at Two Rivers Renn Faire to a true SCA event. Overall our event was a success, and we’re excited to host more in the future!
Arrow-Making Classes – June 24, July 1, 8
Throughout the summer, we offered a series of arrow-making classes to teach our members the craft behind one of the most iconic medieval weapons. Participants learned how to craft their own arrows, from fletching to point-setting. The classes were incredibly well-attended, and several of our archers left with handmade arrows to use in future competitions.
Highlands War – August 14-17
In August, we traveled to the Highlands War for a weekend of epic battles and strategic warfare. This event is known for its large-scale war scenarios, and our fighters participated in organized battles and skirmishes. It was a wonderful experience of camaraderie and competition, and we returned with memorable stories of the battles and their victories.
Cast and Sew Workshop – October 18
As fall set in, we hosted a “Cast and Sew” workshop, where members could learn period-appropriate sewing techniques and get hands-on experience with the materials. From making garb to crafting period accessories, this event allowed us to enhance our personal kits and deepen our craft skills.
Pumpkin Patch Demo – October 25
As Halloween approached, we embraced the seasonal spirit with a demo at the Pumpkin Patch hosted by Champion Church. We took the stage and showed the prowess of our fighters, new and old, heavy and rapier. The event was a big hit with families, and we even had a few fighters taking pictures with the kiddos when the demo was over.
Cooking Demo – November 15
In November, Lady Aeschine and Lord Mihil hosted a cooking demonstration where we explored period recipes and techniques. Members showed off their skills in using a period cooking setup using historically accurate methods and ingredients. The smells of roasted meats, fresh-baked breads, and period stews wafted through the air, and we were able to share the rich history of feast-worthy meals!
Regular Activities:
Throughout the year, we maintained a consistent presence with our regular activities, including:
- Fighter Practices: Regular practices throughout the year allowed our armored and rapier combatants to hone their skills and prepare for events.
- Archery Practices: We held several archery practices, allowing new and seasoned archers to refine their technique.
- Scribal Nights: Our scribes gathered regularly to work on calligraphy and illumination, creating beautiful scrolls for awards and members.
- Meetings and Workshops: We hosted regular meetings and various workshops to support the interests of our group for arts and sciences.
