This event will be a place to have fun and relax. \nThere will be a heavy fighters bear pit into a double elimination tournament.  Rapier will be tic/attack/toe tournament.  Tic/Attack/Toe is a “live” tick/tack/toe however you will have to fight to keep your spot.  If there are not enough fighters\, there will be a bear pit into a double elimination tournament.  Archery is BACK with another tournament at the archery range on site. The archery tournament is still being planned; the format will be announced later. \nSharpen those quills! “The fastest calligrapher in the west” tournament will be held for those that believe the quill is mightier than the sword or bow. You will be given a short phrase to complete in a set amount of time. Points will be added or subtracted based on neatness\, readability and completing the task on time. \nThere will be scroll making supplies available for those that would like to practice calligraphy or try their hand at making scrolls. No skills required. \nThe Shire of Burning Sands’ bread tournament is back!. Loaves must be fully baked; there will not be on-site baking! Feel free to bring toppings or dips for your bread\, but note that the vote will be based on the bread alone. The winner will be determined by populace vote. Remember\, your loaf can only be voted on if there is enough to be sampled\, so plan accordingly. Please include an index card with the ingredients used in your entry(s). \nYou can support the Shire of Burning Sands by participating in our silent auction. Bid on as many goods as you desire! Just know that all proceed go toward helping refill the shire coffers. Have you been purging your closets this New Years? If you have items needing a new home\, please consider donating to our auction. \nWhen you’re here\, you are family\, and the Shire provides for family.  At no additional cost beyond site fee\, a lunch of soup and sandwiches with water\, lemonade\, and tea will be available to all attendees! \nFinally\, for those seeking to stay the night prior or after\, the site is centrally located between several different hotels so you will have no shortage of options for a place to rest your weary head and be fresh for war practice the next day. Yuma Palms Mall is nearby\, offering many options for eating out. \nWe look forward to seeing you all there!

SUMMARY:Fighter Practice
DESCRIPTION:Both Armored Combat and Rapier fighter practice are held Saturdays\, 8am-10am\, near Ramada #11 (SE side) of Caballero Park in Yuma\, AZ. For notices of cancellation please check our calendar and our Facebook group! \nIf you are interested in combat sports and martial arts\, come give it a try! We have loaner gear available\, just let us know you are interested by emailing our marshal at marshal@burningsands.atenveldt.org or posting to our Facebook group! Note you will want to bring your own hard-shelled sports cup (groin protection namely for males) and maybe wear long sleeved clothing. Otherwise\, we have everything else you need\, you just have to show up! \nYou must be 16 and older to participate and must sign a waiver for liability purposes at every practice unless you are a paid member and authorized to fight in the SCA. Participants under 18 years old must have a parent or legal guardian present to sign a waiver and consent form. \nWhat to expect your first time at a fighter practice:\nWe will go over all safety requirements and procedures before having you (or your parent/legal guardian) sign a waiver. Then we will help you get armored up from our loaners appropriate for armored combat or rapier\, depending on your expressed interest. We then will do an armor inspection to make sure your armor meets minimum requirements and is safe. Next\, we will help calibrate\, which involves delivering a blow to your person to help you understand the varying degrees of force used\, i.e. what is considered light\, good\, and excessive. We will go over some basic rules including what striking areas are legal or not. Next\, we will go over and practice some basic stances and techniques to make sure you can safely deliver a blow and defend yourself. Finally\, we let you have a go at it and see what you can do! Many first timers struggle with having an idea in there head of what is going to happen and executing that idea the way they pictured it. More often than not it almost never works out the way you imagined it\, and that is okay! That shouldn’t discourage you from trying something that sounds cool in your head\, sometimes it works out and can surprise even the most seasoned of fighters! We are all students and teachers here\, even you\, and we learn the most when we humble ourselves to those facts. \nFor more information on safety and rules\, please refer to the SCA Armored Combat (Rattan) Marshals Handbook and/or Atenveldt Rapier Handbook found in the Kingdom Document Library. \n
