SUMMARY:Fighter Practice
DESCRIPTION:Both Armored Combat and Rapier fighter practice are held Saturdays\, 8am-10am\, near Ramada #11 (SE side) of Caballero Park in Yuma\, AZ. For notices of cancellation please check our calendar and our Facebook group! \nIf you are interested in combat sports and martial arts\, come give it a try! We have loaner gear available\, just let us know you are interested by emailing our marshal at marshal@burningsands.atenveldt.org or posting to our Facebook group! Note you will want to bring your own hard-shelled sports cup (groin protection namely for males) and maybe wear long sleeved clothing. Otherwise\, we have everything else you need\, you just have to show up! \nYou must be 16 and older to participate and must sign a waiver for liability purposes at every practice unless you are a paid member and authorized to fight in the SCA. Participants under 18 years old must have a parent or legal guardian present to sign a waiver and consent form. \nWhat to expect your first time at a fighter practice:\nWe will go over all safety requirements and procedures before having you (or your parent/legal guardian) sign a waiver. Then we will help you get armored up from our loaners appropriate for armored combat or rapier\, depending on your expressed interest. We then will do an armor inspection to make sure your armor meets minimum requirements and is safe. Next\, we will help calibrate\, which involves delivering a blow to your person to help you understand the varying degrees of force used\, i.e. what is considered light\, good\, and excessive. We will go over some basic rules including what striking areas are legal or not. Next\, we will go over and practice some basic stances and techniques to make sure you can safely deliver a blow and defend yourself. Finally\, we let you have a go at it and see what you can do! Many first timers struggle with having an idea in there head of what is going to happen and executing that idea the way they pictured it. More often than not it almost never works out the way you imagined it\, and that is okay! That shouldn’t discourage you from trying something that sounds cool in your head\, sometimes it works out and can surprise even the most seasoned of fighters! We are all students and teachers here\, even you\, and we learn the most when we humble ourselves to those facts. \nFor more information on safety and rules\, please refer to the SCA Armored Combat (Rattan) Marshals Handbook and/or Atenveldt Rapier Handbook found in the Kingdom Document Library. \n

SUMMARY:Populace Meeting & SCA 101 Class
DESCRIPTION:We will be holding a populace meeting\, Saturday\, Sep 26\, 1pm at the Yuma Main Library\, followed by an SCA 101 class till 4pm. \nJoin us to discuss our upcoming fall events and gatherings! Immediately following the meeting\, our SCA 101 class will offer a welcoming introduction for newcomers and seasoned members alike. We will cover the basics of getting involved in the Society for Creative Anachronism—including choosing a historical persona\, designing heraldry devices\, finding or making historical garb\, exploring arts and sciences\, and learning how combat and local activities work. \nIf you have a project you’re currently working on\, bring it along to work on with friends! All are welcome to attend. \nNOTE: We are having two SCA 101 classes to allow people to choose which one works best\, one Sep 12th and the other Sep 26th. We would love to see the regulars show up to both IF possible. Larger numbers of folk gathering is always encouraging to both old and new participants!

SUMMARY:Blackwork Stitching Class
DESCRIPTION:Come learn traditional blackwork stitching Saturday\, August 29\, 2026 at 1:00 PM at the Yuma Main Library! \nStep back into textile history and discover the art of blackwork stitching! This class covers the fundamentals of counted-thread embroidery\, historic geometric motifs\, and shading techniques. \nAll core materials are provided for beginner practice\, including fabric\, thread\, and needles. If you own embroidery or stitching hoops\, please bring them along. Open to all skill levels! \nWhat is Blackwork? \nBlackwork stitching is a historic style of counted-thread embroidery\, traditionally worked with black silk thread on light-colored linen. Popularized during the Tudor period in England—and closely associated with Catherine of Aragon\, who brought Spain’s Moorish-influenced geometric needlework styles with her—it was historically used to embellish collars\, cuffs\, sleeves\, and caps to mimic the look of expensive lace. \nWhile both blackwork and modern cross-stitch rely on counting fabric threads on a grid\, their techniques and visual effects differ: \n\n\nStitch Style: Cross-stitch uses small “X” marks to fill shapes with solid blocks of color. Blackwork relies primarily on straight backstitches or Holbein stitches (a double-running stitch that renders the design reversible) to form geometric patterns and filigree line art. \n\n\nShading & Texture: Cross-stitch creates depth using color gradients and shading. Blackwork achieves shading through line density\, varying the thickness of thread\, or spacing out repetitive geometric motifs (filling patterns) to create lighter and darker tones. \n\n\nVersatility: Modern cross-stitch is often full-coverage\, whereas blackwork focuses heavily on negative space and intricate geometric line framing.
